Lady Eagles Make Quarterfinals —and School History

The 4th-ranked Liberty High School girls’ basketball team made school history this past weekend at the UIL Class 5A Region II girls’ basketball tournament held at the John Evan Jones Event Center in Center City.

Liberty defeated two highly ranked teams to win the Regional Championship and earn the school’s first berth into the State tournament. The Lady Lions began the tournament by upsetting the top-ranked and previously undefeated team from Scott City High School 62-51 in the Regional Semifinals on Friday. Liberty (32-6) jumped out to a 27-23 halftime lead and didn't let up, outscoring SC (33-1) 35-28 in the second half.

Liberty’s victory over Scott City set up a showdown in the Regional Finals against 15th-ranked Jackson Summit High School on Saturday. Down 20-17 at halftime, the Lady Lions opened the second half with a 13-0 run, putting them up by 10 points. It was a lead that Liberty never relented as they held on to beat the Lady Jaguars (32-7) 43-39. Liberty will now face 5th-ranked Cedar Park Vista Ridge (34-4) in the State Semifinals at 8:30pm on Thursday, March 3 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Students, parents and fans wishing to sit in Liberty’s section must purchase pre-sale tickets. Pre-sale 5A session tickets for Liberty’s section are available for purchase at Liberty High School until noon on Wednesday for $16.00 each.
